I too was at university during the height of Mac Miller, and my roommates parents surprised us with tickets to see him live! I’ll cherish that forever.
Absolutely love this piece. I relate to the concept of toxic creativity except I think it's been sold to us as a romanticized version of passion. You know those phrases of "if you want something so bad, the entire universe will conspire to give it to you"? I don't think that's true- I think that's the opposite actually. The universe is more like " cN you pls stop being so fucking needy. Imma not give what you want".
Also pride and prejudice?? Hell to the yes. My fav sentence of all time is the sentence the book opens with. It's a famous one and Austen is a God.
Interesting article and really enjoyed this piece!!
Thank you so much, Messy :) Haha, I like that thought a lot. It is weird, that sometimes when you don't try at all, everything just falls into your lap, and other times when you're white knuckled, giving every atom, nothing works out. Strange indeed. I have no answers for this.
I'm enjoying Austen's writing style a lot, I'll certainly read more of her work after finishing Pride and Prejudice.
Your comment means a lot to me, thank you once again.
I highly relate to your creative process, to Mac's sanctuary. It's hard to associate space to creativity... it never stops in other contexts, but I can't direct it where I want it to go quite so easily and I lose momentum much quicker.
Hi Abby, I highly recommend checking out the YouTube channel Creative Minds. It has a plethora of videos on creatives from every field and has really helped me understand my own creative self. I think it could help you on your own journey.
The fear of losing momentum is what can keep me ‘locked’ away. It’s like I’ve finally got the fire going, and if I stop blowing, I’ll freeze to death.
What you said about space, I think that might be a big part of the ‘issue’. Almost like the creative energy needs to be contained.
Thank you for your thoughts, you’ve got me thinking even deeper about this topic now.
Honestly I was “too cool” for Mac Miller before he passed. I was (am?) such a fuckin hipster, but I have to drive 3hrs tomorrow and you’ve inspired me to check him out.
I know you've already gone on your drive, but I would recommend starting with Watching Movies with the Sound Off. Usually I'm a purist when checking out a new artist, and I'll always start at the beginning of their discography, but in this case, skip the first album, you can always check it out at a later date.
I hope you enjoyed Mac's music and had a pleasant drive.
Thank you, Jay. Mac was a great person and artist. Hopefully you can find your own balance with 'toxic creativity'. Though sometimes I think the best art is birthed from imbalance, so who knows, haha. I would also highly recommend the YouTube channel Creative Minds. It looks at many different artists' creative processes and has really helped me understand myself more as a creative person.
Nice piece. Thanks for writing.
Thank you, Dana. Nice profile picture.

I am so envious, I’ve watched lots of live videos of him on YouTube, but obviously it’s not the same. A special moment with a special artist.

"Toxic creativity." What a concept. You (and Mac Miller) have put into words something I've been thinking about and feeling for a long time
Bravo ❤️

I'll have check out Creative Minds! Thanks for the tip :)
And I agree that, for better or worse, interesting art can arise from imbalance
You’re welcome :) Godspeed.
